Most of these words, in the table below, have to be taught as sight words on an as and when basis. However we can let you know that the vowel sound that y will make is either short or long /i/ vowel sound. The bad news is there are few hard and fast rules on why this happens. Still it is nice to know the reasons why, and the rules behind it. Fortuntly these are less common words, and this has only happened once to me in 13 years of teaching. There will be one, there is always one, students who when you ask them to give you a word with a Y in it will say bicycle, gym, system or type. Kids will read the onset, then the rime, and then read and rewrite the full word. Some words that do not have the double consonant will be have a second consonant added when a suffix is added to the end of the word. When this happens and it is followed by a vowel, the vowel sound will be short. Build a Word: 3 worksheets which separate the onset (r-blend) and rime (vowel plus ending letters). A double consonant is when a consonant occurs twice in a row. They all provide intentional and targeted practice for learning r-blend words. Now for the tricky y as a vowel sound words.
